How fit do I need to be? - How good a mountain biker do I need to be?

To really enjoy these holidays you need to be a regular exercisier. This does not mean a 10 times a week gym person but someone who takes exercise most weeks on a regular basis, say walking or biking most weekends. Needless to say the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the rides.

Mountain biking can be an exhausting activity. If you doubt your fitness, don't panic, we work at our clients pace and rest frequently on the rides. If a ride becomes too hard you can always take a lift in the support vehicle.

Your guide is also a personal fitness instructor and he will be able to give you some advice about improving your cycling fitness.

How hard are the rides?

We have graded our rides into two difficulty levels.

green rides Green Rides = Easy/Beginner: Suitable for those who enjoy a bit of exercise and who may be either quite new to mountain biking or a little out of practice. The pace will be gentle to start, with difficulty and length of ride gradually progressing throughout the week. Expect to be in the saddle for 2-4 hours per day.

In terms of difficulty we ride mainly on forest trails and unmade loose surface tracks. Whilst there are some difficult loose and lumpy sections they are negotiable.

amber rides Amber Rides = Moderate/Intermediate: These trips are suitable for those with reasonable fitness and off-road biking experience. There will be some challenging climbs and descents with some areas of track requiring good bike control and line selection. Expect to be in the saddle for 3-5 hours per day.
